“Language forms our worlds. In the event of conflict or trauma, these worlds are held under siege by things beyond ordinary grammar. We kick so as not to sink. We build coping mechanisms to keep us afloat. We find other ways to speak, to scream, to not remain silent. We keep telling our stories.”
– Dhiyanah Hassan

from 2016’s Artist’s Statement

Storytelling is important to me. The process of building or exploring personal narratives
allow us to reclaim our identities and agency, especially if either had
been taken away from us. Stories allow us to situate ourselves within a bigger picture,
to help us connect and guide us through life.

I aim to make meaningful work using my art and writing.
I aim for my work to be a clear conduit for telling, navigating, and amplifying stories.

My focus this year is to sharpen my visual narrative skills and grow my freelance illustration practice. I'm focusing more on telling a story in one image rather than through a series.

I've recently embraced the link between my art practice and my attraction to mysticism, eg. healing, energy work, and tarot, and I'm exploring some of that in my writing, specifically in a monthly column, 'Ash and Stardust' on Burning House Press.
