When I Grow Up...

The first of this series, these watercolor paintings feature extracts of a body trying to merge into (or emerge from) an agitated body of water. These works started out as a longing for the ocean - growing up, where I was, the sea was always nearby. Except for the 4 years I spent in Kuala Lumpur, which was when my desire to be reunited with the waterscapes was at its hungriest and I would jokingly say, "When I grow up, I'm going to be sea foam."

The Kick Most of All

The Kick Most of All

Hold a floatable in front of you, dunk your head underwater and introduce yourself to the lack of breath. Kick. Keep kicking. Without this you’ll never learn how to move – free, frog, the failed butterfly – how to paddle. This will help you, for when you get tired and the arms fail so the legs do all the work. This will help you, for when you forget how to break surfaces with your head and need to slow down. It’s easy to forget how the body already holds air to keep you afloat. Kick to remember.

And I'll Raise You A Storm

And I'll Raise You A Storm

Free styling, contained. In deep water. Fin your limbs. Thrash. Memories of old houses that took up many names shrivel at the bottom of the pool. Give up the waves.

Neither Here Nor There

Neither Here Nor There

Clash the currents. What borders these are, they do not hold – merge the differences that make you whole.

Keep Spilling

Keep Spilling

The places you lived in, the people you left, the moments you couldn’t grasp – memories that won’t leave you. Thread the tides into streams and stories, build your narrative. You learn to breathe the salt in, eventually.

While the rest of this series are smaller works on watercolor paintings, these two pieces were larger - the final push of release and exorcism that this project grew into. The two larger paintings were exhibited in White Box, Publika for a show called Elusive.
